CodingGraphic TypesThere are three graphic formats popularly used for web pages. Chosen for their ability to allow compression of the images without significant losses, these formats are JPG, GIF, and PNG. The extension of the file identifies the type i.e. image.jpg would of course be a JPG. Each has pro and cons and uses for which they are better suited. JPG and GF are most common.
JPG or JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is best suited for complicated photographs with millions of colors.
GIF's (Graphic Interchange Format) can be more compressed and are best suited for images with only a few colors such as text only and simple clipart. Gif's also allow for animation and transparent backgrounds, which JPG's do not.
PNG's (Portable Network Graphics) are becoming more common as browser support improves. Which type yo use should depend on the type of image and use for the graphic. Obviously, transparent and/or animated images will be GIF's, but what about other images? Let's take a quick look at a couple of samples. Look at the example and see the image quality and size. |
